Fit Camp: Week 2

Life Changers COGIC
Pastors Gerald & Judy Mandrell

Winter Fit Camp 2014
Week 2: “Living Water”
By Dr. Asha Fields Brewer

Water makes up most of the Earth and most of our bodies.  We lose it every day, so it is important that we replace it regularly. However, many of us see water more as a “free beverage” at the restaurant, instead of regarding it for the life-sustaining fluid it really is.

In John 4:6 we follow the story of the Samaritan Woman at the well.  When she went to fill her jug, the Bible says that Jesus saw her, He was wearied, and He said to her, “Give me a drink.”   This shows us that even our Savior,  thirsts!  Therefore “thirst” is a sensation we definitely should not ignore.  Oftentimes we’ll give into our cravings of sodas, juices, and the like; yet we will ignore the actual feeling of being “thirsty” in the first place.  Cravings tell you what you desire, but thirst tells you what you need.  And because we thirst, we know we were created with an inherent NEED for water.

So let’s address why we don’t drink water. A common aversion to water is the [lack of] taste. We use this to excuse ourselves from hydrating properly.  However, we make no excuse to incessantly water flowers, trees, vegetable gardens, and even single-seed potted plants in Kindergarten. Why are we willing to water the ground and not ourselves? As stated in Genesis 2:7, are we NOT made of the dust of the Earth?  The Earth needs water to survive, and we are its dust, so the same principle applies to us...WE need water to survive.

God even acknowledged the importance of hydration by watering the ground when He created the earth.  Genesis 2 says that He watered the whole face of the ground and out of the ground sprung up every tree that was pleasant to the sight and good for food.  If water is important to sustaining the food we eat, then it must be equally important in sustaining our bodies as well.

If that didn’t inspire you to drink more water, consider this. Dirt alone is not able to conform to the Potter’s touch, but the addition of water to that dirt is what makes the resulting clay malleable under the Potter’s hand.  Clay can be molded into a particular vessel which is intended for a particular purpose.   Inasmuch the same, water when introduced to our “dust” bodies molds us for service. It bathes tissues like our muscles and brains and keeps them operating at the right electrical charge.  Water supports organs like our kidneys and bladder, so toxins can be filtered out and nutrients can be shuttled in.  Water works intimately with the blood to keep the cells of the body regulated and ready to serve.  The common thread, water helps our cells, tissues, and organs carry out a particular purpose in our bodies.  When you thirst, it is not merely because your throat is dry or you need to wash something down.  Thirst is an inherent need for water, so your body can function at a higher level for both physical and spiritual service.

Challenge #1 for the week: Drink ONE cup of water first thing in the morning.  Before you eat, before your coffee, before your smoothie, drink at least 8 ounces of living water.

Challenge #2 for the week: Inventory your day. Many say they don’t have time to work out, they regularly get caught up at work, etc.  However, last week we learned that working out is worship, so why is it not a priority?  Take note how you spend your time each day.  Keep a log of tasks/ duties and times spent.  Have this prepared for next week.

TFR Episode #23 Recap: "Stressing Is Messing with Your Blessing: Vince Graham, CPT Guest"

Temple Fit Radio Episode 23 Recap
"Stressing Is Messing with Your Blessing: Vince Graham, CPT Guest"
Air date 1/29/2014

We are starting a new series on stress.  We are impacted by stress on a daily basis, but what do we do about?  What can we do about it?  I had some guest experts stop by, and I shared some revelation God gave me as well. Stay tuned this month for more on "Stressing Is Messing with Your Blessing."

Interview with Mr. Vince Graham, CPT
President of Health and Fitness Chronicles 2.0.

Temple Fit Radio: Often times, we view stress as something external that we cannot control.  We see it as circumstances that occur in our environment and situations we cannot avoid.  However, you have a different perspective on stress...

Vince Graham: Stress is about the external things in our environment, but it is also about the internal effects as well. Stress is adequately defined as a psychological problem with real physical effects and/or a demand on physical and mental energy.  Long-term stress is particularly dangerous- eventually "wearing out" the body.  Because of its effect on the immune response, stress increases susceptibility to illness and slows healing. It can lead to nutritional deficiency. It alters the way we perform, think, or feel. Stress can even become addictive.

TFR: You have given a talk on stress before, "The Impact of Stress on the Human Body Can Be Devastating." Why do you specifically categorize these effects as "devastating"?

VG: Almost all body functions and organs react to stress. Many experts believe  the impacts of stress precipitate all illness! Stress promotes the formation of free radicals, which leads to damage of body tissues, especially cell membranes.

TFR: What are “free radicals,” and how do they impair the cell’s ability to function?

VG: Free radicals cause damage to cells.  Cells make up tissues, which make up organs.  Free radicals attack and destroy the cell’s protective membranes and genetic material, the DNA of the cell, causing severe damage, which weakens the immune system. Impairing the immune system, leads to infections and various degenerative diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.   The free radical exists for a tiny fraction of a second, but the damage caused can be irreversible.

TFR: It seems that as we age, we encounter more external sources of stress.  We have kids, we have jobs, we have bills. How does aging relate to the internal stresses as well?

TFR Episode #22 Recap- "Health By the Numbers: #120 and #80"

Temple Fit Radio Episode 22 Recap
"Health by the Numbers: #120 and #80"
Aired on 1/15/2014
Listen live here.

Next month is Heart Month, so this final installment of “Health by the Numbers” will focus on the numbers of the heart...120 and 80.
  • If you’ve ever had a physical exam, you’ve had your blood pressure checked.  However, do you know what these numbers even mean?
  • "120/80" is all about the pressure to pump and receive blood. These numbers basically tell us how hard the heart is working.

The top number is a "pushing" number.
  • This tells us how much force the heart must produce to pump blood all over the body.
  • The higher the number, the harder the heart is working.
  • The highest we'd like the number to go is 120mmHg.

The bottom number is "filling" number.
  • This tells us how much force it takes to re-fill the heart with blood.
  • This, again, gives us a clue as to how hard the heart is working. As a matter of fact, professionally trained athletes have a low lower number, because their hearts are well-rehearsed at keeping blood flowing throughout the body.
  • The harder it is to fill the heart, the less blood will flow into it. This leaves for less blood to be pumped throughout the rest of the body. Blood that is not moving properly can become stagnant, leading to clots and other heart conditions.
  • The highest we'd like the bottom number to go is 80mmHg.

Blood is the substance of Life.
  • As people of Faith, we know all too much how important and valuable the Blood is. We cannot take for granted it's importance in our daily lives. After all, we are supposed to be LIVING sacrifices, not DYING sacrifices...

Fit Camp: Week 1

Life Changers COGIC
Pastors Gerald & Judy Mandrell

Winter Fit Camp 2014
Week 1: “Working Out Is Worship”
Dr. Asha Fields Brewer

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 KJV - 19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Every work-out is an opportunity for a worship experience.  The temples we have were given to us on loan from God.  We are not the owners, but rather the managers of this estate, and we are therefore responsible for the upkeep and day-to-day operations.  How we maintain or do not maintain the temple is a reflection of our respect for the Owner’s property and the Owner Himself.

FOR OTHERS: We must be mindful of our curb appeal  This is how we present ourselves to others.  If the grass is unkempt, weeds are engulfing the house, and trash is strewn across the lawn, that is negative curb appeal. Likewise, If your health is unkempt, controllable illnesses are out of control, stress is over-taking you, and you have a pill for every letter in the alphabet, that is negative curb appeal. How many people have neglected to turn down your street, or even into your neighborhood, because of your negative curb appeal?  How many people have been turned off from God or neglected to visit Him altogether, because your life reflects the exact opposite of the health and salvation they are seeking?

FOR YOU: Just like you meet God in your worship, meet Him in your workout.  Show Him how appreciative you are of this temple.  Actively demonstrate praise with  the use of your limbs and unified function of your organs.  Honor Him by treating His property well, and presenting it well to others.  Allow God to get glory out of your body and your spirit, which are His. Make your workouts yet another opportunity to worship to Him.

Some benefits of physical activity:
*Increase your worship endurance and your praise stamina.
*Better mood and disposition
*Stress relief
*General health and wellness
*Weight management
*Decrease chemical dependence (medications and other addictions)
*Detoxify your system

*What are some others you can think of?

TFR Episode #21 Recap- "Health by the Numbers: #120"

Temple Fit Radio Episode 21 Recap
"Health by the Numbers: #120"
Aired on 1/15/2014
Listen live here.

We’re continuing our “Health by the Numbers” series. We know numbers have a huge importance in the spiritual realm, and we want to make sure that above all our getting, we get an understanding of the importance of numbers in our physical bodies as well. .

Today’s number is 120
  • Red blood cells are in circulation for 120 days, which is 4 months.
  • They are responsible for carrying toxins and wastes away from other cells in the body, and bringing nutrients and necessities towards these cells.
  • Since the RBC's are each on a 120-day assignment, this means the remnants of poor eating choices or unhealthy habits could potentially remain with us for the life of a Red Blood Cell...120 days.

Therefore, look for your biggest overall changes and challenges 4 months down the line.
  • Use this as a time to reflect, re-assess, and re-focus.
    • Start by reaching IN----
      • Stick to that healthy eating plan you created at the beginning of the year
      • Make note of how far you’ve come, celebrate your accomplishments, and create more goals to work towards in the future.  If you’ve made it this far, the toughest part is behind you.
    • End by reaching OUT---
      • Get your family and friends involved
      • Encourage them with your testimony of success.
      • Be their example and their motivation.

I hope you were encouraged by today’s devotion to keep your temple fit for God’s service. Now that you know, share with someone you love.

TFR Episode #20 Recap- "Health by the Numbers: #6"

Temple Fit Radio Episode 20 Recap
"Health by the Numbers: #6"
Aired on 1/8/2014

Listen live here.

Last week we started our “Health by the Numbers” series
  • We know numbers have a huge importance in the spiritual realm, and we wanted to understand the importance of numbers in our body’s as well.

"6" is the number of Man
  • Man was created on the 6th day in Genesis 1: 27-31
  • The body works on 6 week cycles.
    • It takes 6 weeks to break down tissues
    • Then 6 weeks to build them back up.
    • That’s why you wear a cast for AT LEAST 6 weeks, or go to physical therapy for AT LEAST 6 weeks. It follows the cycle of tissue growth in the body.

As you push through with your resolutions, keep pushing to WEEK 6!
  • We are in week 2 of the new year now...but don’t grow weak in week 6.
  • Help this 6-week cycle be positive and productive:
  • FIRST 6 WEEKS, DESTRUCTION PHASE, ↓6 weeks down
    • Give your body 6 weeks to get used to your lifestyle adjustments
    • Focus areas: conditioning exercises, stamina and endurance exercises, and proper eating.
    • Reminders: make sure you are working on your posture and your breathing, so you can lay a healthy foundation for the the next phase.
    • Expectations: You will most likely lose the most pounds in this phase, because you are trimming off what your body deems unnecessary.
  • SECOND 6 WEEKS, CONSTRUCTION PHASE, ↑6 weeks up
    • During the 2nd 6-weeks, you’ll notice more visible changes.
    • Focus areas: work on tone and strength here, step up your cardio and conditioning.
    • Challenge: explore more healthy eating choices now that your tastebuds have matured and your cravings are under control.
    • Expectations: Your weight loss may begin to slow down or even go up. This is because you are building muscle. Don't be discouraged, because this is healthy weight.

Every 6 weeks, new and exciting changes are happening in your body.
  • You’re achieving goals and making new ones.
  • You’re challenging your body and pushing it to greater heights.
  • Be patient with your body, so the perfect work can be done.

Don't grow weak in week 6!

I hope today’s devotion empowered you to take better care of your temple and keep it fit for God’s service. Now that you know, share with someone you love!
