 Caution: Watch Your Feet!

by Dr. Asha S. Fields Brewer
Physiology of Feet
The feet are body part often taken for-granted.  Sure, we get them polished and sometimes even massaged; but we don’t reverence them for the all important members they are. It’s hard to really understand the importance of the feet, because we cannot physically see how hard and intricately they are functioning in our highest of heels and most dapper of dress shoes.   I mean, they are not the eyes that serve as windows to our souls. They are not the heart that pumps life throughout our veins.  They are not the arms that embrace loved ones.  They are the feet.  How mundane is that?

According to Marieb (2004), The feet have two important functions: “supporting our body weight” and “acting as a lever to propel the body forward.”  Lieberman et. al (2010) have researched that 1.5 to 3 times our body weight is experienced in our feet when our heels strike the ground during running. (The feet are getting a bit more interesting, aren’t they)?  Consider this even, your heart can desire to go somewhere...your mind can decide to go somewhere, but you will remain exactly where you are until you take that first step. The feet, they determine where we are going and how we get there.  Guess what, the Devil knows this too.  He was there when God created Man, so He understands the importances of these members and is launching an attack against them. It is by no accident that the Bible reminds us many times to take caution and watch our feet.

Duty 1: Your Feet Were Designed to Support Your Body Weight
Your Feet are connected to your Peace.

Oftentimes 3x, 4x, and 5x of our spiritual weight is loaded on our  feet. Good, because this is what they were designed to do...carry the weight.  However, The problem comes when we try to shift this weight to other body parts that were not designed to to such.

Stop putting your hands on every situation...we were not designed to stand on our hands. Handstands are entertaining tricks, but living life upside down is not practical in the long run.  Our hands were designed to work, bless, heal, and gain wealth. If we are standing on them, how can they accomplish these tasks in their job description?  Furthermore, our feet are connected to our peace.  You ever wonder why you just can’t find rest in that one situation?  Take it out of your hands and put it on your feet.

Therefore  take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in  the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm...and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

Stop carrying all that stress on your shoulders...we were not designed to stand on our heads.  We think things over and over and over and over and over and over (you get it), until we wear ourselves out.  Take these things off your mind and put them on your feet. Stand firm in God, and be confident in knowing that He not only built your feet for this moment, but He would also not put more on those feet than they could bear.  I guarantee your headaches would decrease if you would just take that wait off your head and put it on your feet.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Duty 2: Your Feet Were Designed as a Lever to Propel You Forward
Your feet are connected to your Blessing.

Everyone wants to move forward, but no one has the confidence to take the first step.  So much is dependent on our feet being IN MOTION.  Our feet can only propel our bodies forward if they are in fact moving, and this propelling force by nature keeps us moving.

Furthermore, our MOVING feet are attached to our blessing...
Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the  Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who  seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

God told Moses and Joshua to MOVE their feet, and He blessed them with territory expansion...
Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. Your territory shall be  from the wilderness to  the Lebanon and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea.  No one shall be able to stand against you. The  Lord  your God will lay  the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread, as he promised you.

(To Joshua) Joshua 1:3
Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

God told Joshua and his army to MOVE their feet,  and He blessed them with victory...
You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.  Seven priests shall bear seven  trumpets of  rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and  the priests shall blow the trumpets.  And when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat,  and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him."

Praying for Your Feet
So we see that the feet are extremely important members of the body.  They bear our weight and propel us forward.  They keep us firm in God and following His direction.  Be careful to pray specifically and consistently for your feet, for the Devil is preying over them as well. Here are some Scriptures to get you started...

Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me.

“For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.”

My son, do not lose sight of these— keep sound wisdom and discretion, Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.

Health Devo: Get Some Rest, Joseph

"Get Some Rest, Joseph"

by Dr. Asha S. Fields Brewer

Matthew 11:28-30

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

We are offered “rest” many times throughout the Bible, yet we insist on staying awake, pushing to do more.  What can we truly accomplish by forcing ourselves past the breaking point and staying awake?  What are we able to do that God cannot handle on His own?  Can we really out-work, out-plan, and out-think God? While we believe we are benefiting ourselves in achieving just one more task, dotting just one more “i”, and crossing just one more “t”...we are often doing our spiritual, physical, and mental health a disservice.  Even worse, our inability to slow down and get some rest hampers God's ability to do more in our lives.

{Joseph}
When Joseph was asleep, God gave him vision.

As Christians, we talk about purpose with “vision”.  “What is God’s ‘vision’ for our lives?”  “What is His ‘vision’ for the Body of Christ?” We say it often, but what do we really know about vision? We know that without vision, we will perish (Proverbs 29:18).  We also know when we have vision, we are to write it down and make it plain (Habakkuk 2:2).  But how does one receive “vision” in the first place?

Joseph was known (famously and infamously) for his intricate dreams, his visions. Do you know when he received them?  In his sleep.  Dreaming only happens in the deep, REM sleep.  In dreams, the filter of Conscious Thought, hangs his hat, allowing Subconscious Thought a chance to roam freely.  No insecurities, justifications, or excuses are allowed. Just pure and unadulterated thoughts.

The same happens spiritually.  As Joseph puts it, dreams are God’s way of showing you what He is “about to do” (Genesis 41:25). We just have to lay there and listen.  So what is God telling you He is about to do in your life?  What vision is He trying to reveal?

You must dream the vision before you can live it. Go to sleep and allow God to give you something to wake up for.

Love You,
Dr. Asha :)

Health Devo: The Spiritual Science behind Simply Looking UP!

The Spiritual Science behind Simply Looking UP!

by Dr. Asha S. Fields Brewer

Psalm 121:1-2 ESV- I lift up my eyes to  the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the  Lord, who made heaven and earth.
Psalm 27:6 ESV- And now my  head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of  joy; I will sing and make melody to the  Lord .
Psalm 24:7-10 KJV- Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The  Lord  strong and mighty, the  Lord  mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The  Lord  of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

PHYSICALLY LOOKING UP
David tells us all over the Psalms to simply LOOK UP.  Here I want you to pause... take a moment to stop all that you are doing, lift your eyes, and literally look up...
You might have noticed that you instinctively felt the need to breathe in deeply.  This is actually based on a physiological response where pulling your eyes upward triggers you to inflate your lungs with air.  If looking up fills you with breath, what do you think looking down does? Mhmmm....

SPIRITUALLY LOOKING UP
Don’t think it coincidental that God made a physiological  connection between your vision and your breathing. In our spiritual bodies, He did the same.  If we look up with our spiritual eyes, we are showing God that we are inviting Him in and seeking His direction, guidance, and  help.  In return, He grants us with the Breath of Life...that help that lifts us up and keeps us lifted up (Psalm 24:7-10 KJV, Psalm 121:1-2 ESV).
God has been breathing this Breath of Life into us since the Beginning. It is  refreshing, giving us that daily renewal to endure (2 Cor. 4:16-17 ESV).  It is cleansing, shoving out the impurities and making room for more of Him (2 Kings 4:32-35 ESV).  It is awakening, calling forth life to dead situations Ezekiel 37:4-10, 14 ESV).  It is organizing, causing understanding  even unto  dust to formulate and operate as a complex system of cells, tissues, and organs (Job 32:8). It is a reminder that we are not yet dead, nor defeated, because we are still living and ....inhale, exhale...breathing.
Genesis 2:7-Then the  Lord  God formed the man of  dust from the ground and  breathed into his  nostrils the breath of life, and  the man became a living creature.

LOOKING DOWN IS SELF-DEFEAT
Now we know that a head which is lifted up brings forth life.  Instead, imagine yourself at some time when you were stressed and/or depressed.  What did your body  physically look like?  How was your posture?  Without even noticing it, you were probably flexed forward and slumped down  with your head hung low, assuming the “posture of defeat.” This “posture of defeat” seems to be the instinctive pattern we resort to when we are going through difficult and stressful times, but why?   We are making it easier for life to defeat us, because we are literally closing down on our lungs and encroaching upon the muscles of respiration.  We are literally smothering ourselves.
The Devil knows about the power that comes with the Breath of Life. He knows that we cannot speak if we cannot breathe.  He knows that we cannot testify if we cannot breathe.  He knows that we cannot rejoice if we cannot breath.  And he most certainly knows that we cannot live if we cannot breathe.  So since he can’t take away this Breath of Life, he instead endeavors to limit our access to it.  The Devil will convince us to take on the flexed forward and slumped posture of defeat. Why?  Because no Breath= no life, making his job so much easier (Genesis 7:22 ESV). (So lazy and predictable isn’t he)? So instead of  him having to expend the energy to actually fight, he can just sit back and relax as we hang our heads and spiritually smother ourselves.  Mhmmm...

ENCOURAGING WORDS
With the hurried pace of society and living, sometimes it’s hard to just stop and catch your breath. Stress and negative emotions have a way of infiltrating all parts of our lives, both spiritual and physical.  However, as David shared, God’s counter to this is for us to simply look up.  So when you’re at the point where you feel like there is absolutely nothing else that you can do, you’re probably right.  But  the only one who has control over your access to that refreshing, cleansing, awakening, organizing, reminding Breath of Life is YOU.  So muster just enough strength spiritually and physically to lift your eyes and look up! Like Job said in his moments of despair, “...as long as my breath is in me, and  the spirit of God is in my nostrils...” (Job 12:10 ESV).  My, my, my, what POWER there is in simply looking up!
