"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
We are offered “rest” many times throughout the Bible, yet we insist on staying awake, pushing to do more. What can we truly accomplish by forcing ourselves past the breaking point and staying awake? What are we able to do that God cannot handle on His own? Can we really out-work, out-plan, and out-think God? While we believe we are benefiting ourselves in achieving just one more task, dotting just one more “i”, and crossing just one more “t”...we are often doing our spiritual, physical, and mental health a disservice. Even worse, our inability to slow down and get some rest hampers God's ability to do more in our lives.
{Joseph}
When Joseph was asleep, God gave him vision.
As Christians, we talk about purpose with “vision”. “What is God’s ‘vision’ for our lives?” “What is His ‘vision’ for the Body of Christ?” We say it often, but what do we really know about vision? We know that without vision, we will perish (Proverbs 29:18). We also know when we have vision, we are to write it down and make it plain (Habakkuk 2:2). But how does one receive “vision” in the first place?
Joseph was known (famously and infamously) for his intricate dreams, his visions. Do you know when he received them? In his sleep. Dreaming only happens in the deep, REM sleep. In dreams, the filter of Conscious Thought, hangs his hat, allowing Subconscious Thought a chance to roam freely. No insecurities, justifications, or excuses are allowed. Just pure and unadulterated thoughts.
The same happens spiritually. As Joseph puts it, dreams are God’s way of showing you what He is “about to do” (Genesis 41:25). We just have to lay there and listen. So what is God telling you He is about to do in your life? What vision is He trying to reveal?
You must dream the vision before you can live it. Go to sleep and allow God to give you something to wake up for.
